Out and about with Saint Martin in Lebbeke, Berlare and Wichelen

Although Saint Martin is still actively celebrated in our region, traditional elements are fading into the background and the differences with the Saint Nicholas celebration are becoming increasingly smaller. We highlight the practices and places associated with Saint Martin in our region via five Saint Martin routes. These routes are part of the more than 5,000 km long 'Via Sancti Martini', a Cultural Route recognized by Europe.

This Saint Martin route through Lebbeke, Berlare, and Wichelen largely follows the GR128. The walking direction is indicated by a combination of the Saint Martin sticker and the red and white GR sign (https://www.groteroutepaden.be/nl/bewegwijzering-en-onderhoud). To discover the Saint Martin heritage in Berlare, leave the GR route for a moment and follow the green arrows. This route then rejoins the GR128.

Please note: this route is not a loop! You can easily return to Wetteren or Oudegem by train.
