Cycling route along dredge finds - Baasrode
The Scheldt has always been a busy river. Throughout history, ships have become larger and larger, and from the end of the 19th century onwards, straightening bends and dredging the watercourse became commonplace. Since dredging was still done by hand in those early days, many archaeological finds were made in the river. The Scheldt has preserved a rich treasure trove of material, which the workers on the dredgers brought to the surface. This in turn attracted the attention of collectors from the wealthy bourgeoisie, who compiled entire collections in this way.
In this bike tour, we want to highlight some well-known and lesser-known river finds. The tour is easy to follow via the bike junctions. We start at junction 58 at the Hof van Peene in Baasrode. We then cycle via Dendermonde and Oudergem towards the ferry in Appels. After crossing the ferry, we continue the tour largely along the Scheldt, eventually returning to Baasrode.
Junctions: 58 – 91 – 89 – 84 – 85 - 81 – 77 – 76 – 83 – 90 – 95 – 99 – 56 – 61 – 58
For the truly athletic, the bike ride can be extended at the ferry in Appels towards Schellebelle. This adds an extra 30 km to the route, bringing the total to 60 km.
This cycling route was created through a collaboration between the Municipal Museums of Dendermonde and the IOED Schelde-Durme.
