Traveling in time in Ruien
As part of the project "Square meter: everyone an archaeologist!" (with support from LEADER East Flanders), the residents of Ruien were given the opportunity to dig into the past of their village like a real archaeologist. Neighbors got to work together with SOLVA archaeologists in small test pits measuring one by one meter. With great enthusiasm and an eye for precision, they searched the subsoil for archaeological clues as to what binds them to their region, to their village and to each other.
The project "Square meter: everyone an archaeologist!" demonstrates that small-scale citizen research can lead to great results. The nearly 800 finds collected cover thousands of years of human habitation. It proves once again that the subsoil still contains a lot of unexplored information.
This walk takes you along the unique archaeological past of Ruien. While walking, you will become acquainted with the results of civilian research and previous archaeological excavations.
