Zurenborg

Welcome to Zurenborg!
Two hundred years ago there was almost nothing on Zurenborg. There was one large farmstead, with farmland around it. That changed when Antwerp began to burst at the seams in the mid-19th century. The rich bourgeoisie wanted to move away from the inner city, to a posh street with nice houses, but still close to the center. Here begins the story of Zurenborg as we can still see it today. A construction company began to subdivide the first land at the end of the 19th century. The wealthier the people who moved to Zurenborg were, the more lavish and exuberant the architects drew the houses. They made an interesting mix of neo-Gothicism, neoclassicism and also some art nouveau.
On this walk you walk through the most beautiful streets of Zurenborg, with the Cogels-Osylei in the lead. More than the architecture, you will discover the stories behind the protected facades, the history of the neighborhood and the hip neighborhood that Zurenborg is today.
