Edouard Remy village
Wijgmaal grew as a village after Edouard Remy bought an old water mill along the Dyle river and set up a starch factory there in 1855.
During this walk, we pass by the current factory and by the new companies that set up their home base on the site. Along the various streets you will find workers' houses, middle-class houses and villas built for the factory's employees. Even the church and the rectory were paid for by the factory. You can understand why people used to say : "Wijgmaal, that's Remy. Remy, that's Wijgmaal!".
