During the night of May 27 to 28, 1940, the German army's 256th Infantry Division occupied our city. During World War II, Blankenberge, as a coastal city, held an important military-strategic position. The seaside resort was literally on the front line and therefore had to be defended against a possible Allied invasion from the sea.

"Better free than all good," is carved on the liberation monument at St. Bartholomew's Church. Freedom is preferable to all material goods; that is the meaning behind those poetic words. They remind us how relieved the people of Merksem felt after liberation, how difficult they had it.
