Schansenroute in Bosland
In Bosland there are many archaeological remains to be found. One of these are the entrenchments. The term entrenchment is used for: an area enclosed by ramparts and moats that was used as a place of refuge and defense. These entrenchments were mainly built by rural people on their own initiative during the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648). Woodland has approximately 24 entrenchments. Not all of these are currently visible in today's landscape. Some have been built up or are in use as farmland. A few still show the original structures.
The IOED Bosland would like to highlight these unique archaeological remains. For this reason a bicycle route along 10 entrenchments was developed, the Schansenroute in Bosland. The cycle route is 31 km long and passes through Hechtel-Eksel, Pelt and Peer.
