Rather Free - Merksem commemorates WW2
"Rather free as all good," it is chiseled on the liberation monument at St. Bartholomew's Church. Freedom is preferable to all material goods, that is the meaning behind those poetic words. They remind us how relieved the people of Merksem felt at the liberation, how difficult they had been during those long years of war and how they cherished their freedom afterwards.
In 2024, Merksem will commemorate 80 years of liberation. To celebrate, the district is inviting you to a walk in which you will discover how the people of Merksem experienced the war and liberation. While walking we remember the events and victims of that time. This way we keep the memory of the war and the liberation alive.
This walk was prepared with the cooperation of the Royal Merksem Heritage Circle.
