The St. Laurentommegang

Saint Laurentius is the patron saint of Bekegem. Because the saint is traditionally associated with fire, he was the inspiration for "Bekegem plays with fire," the annual celebration in the community that takes place on the last Saturday of October.

Normally, "Bekegem plays with fire" always opens with a Eucharist. Then there is a religious circumambulation. Then an announcer declares the celebration open and the mayor lights the Saint Laurentius fire.

Unfortunately... This year there will be no flames. 2020, however, had a lot in store and promised to be a particularly festive edition. After all, 15 years ago the Laurentiusommegang was officially inaugurated and the first edition of Bekegem plays with fire took place. Moreover, Mia Moreaux celebrated her 70th birthday in 2020. All the more reason not to simply draw the line through it.
